I was thinking about getting some sort of snail, just 1 or 2 but not sure cuz I see in the pet stores where their tanks are taken over with snails. How do I get them without them getting out of hand?

Some snails, like brigs, lay their eggs above the water. You can easily take the egg clutch out of the tank. They also take a male and a female to mate. They're not hermaphrodites.

I just asked that same question and ended up with 2 Zebra Nerite snails and 1 Pomacea bridgesii. The bridgesii needs a partner to have offspring and the nerites don't seem to be able to have offspring in freshwater. I have only had them about a week.
The bridgesii is really quite interesting. It has much more "personality" than I expected to see from a snail. But they do get quite large so be prepared to house one.
The nerites are pretty "shy".

Steve, where are you located? Most people here may have some snails you want. hat size is the tank? What fish are in it? I have Pomacea diffusa, P. canaliculata and horned nerites myself. The first two lay eggs above the waterline. Simply crush or freeze the eggs if you don't want to hatch them. The canas are banned from interstate shipping so you need to obtain them within your state assuming you're in US.
I am just wondering because I want 1 or 2 snails but I just dont want them to produce and get out of hand. I am looking for something that doesnt get bigger then the size of a quarter. I have a 55 gallon tank and I live in the chicago area.
Briggs would be your best bet although they can get bigger than a quarter. OOOPPSSS sorry Lupin I mean Diffusa
Get clithon sp. or olive nerites. They stay nice and small and won't go out of hand in populations. Problem solved.
