What size tank would I need if I wanted to get, say, 5 platies? Not counting room for babies- I realize they'll probably happen. I wouldn't encourage it, but I would have a grow-out tank that I could put them in until selling or trading them or whatever.

Would they be happy with just that many in a tank? How hard are they to sex?

If they are still small, 10G is OK for me. Otherwise, may be 15G. Almost as easy as Guppy. :)

As a teen I had about 5 or 6 swordtails (similar species) in a 5 or 10 gallon (don't remember how big that tank was now) ... they seemed happy- bred like crazy I was constantly trying to give away the fry to people.

Sexing is very easy in Swordtails - I think Platies will be the same- a pointier fin near the anal opening and the body is a little thinner than the females

Thanks guys. :) I probably won't be able to do it for a while anyway. I'm usually not a huge live-bearer fan, but for some reason the platies always tempt me. :)

I'd say 10g as well.

They're easy to sex, like most livebearers - males have a gonopodium.

Well it's tempting. I'm getting a 10 gallon from someone on craigslist, but it's supposed to be a hospital tank/cory grow out tank. And no WAY my husband will lt me get another one lol. I'm lucky I got the 5 gallon, that was only because I got it on sale for a really good price.

i have a 29gallon tank about 6 months ago i put 5 platys and 3 cories my tank is now very over populated with platies i need to give some away

Well, I personally prefer raising cory babies to raising platy fries. My Albino Cory eggs are hatched recently and they are so cute. :)

Oh, me too, definitely. :) I want the platies without the fry. If they're easy to sex, it may not be an issue. Otherwise, I realize wanting livebearers without fry isn't very practical.
