question about water

You should not top of with anything but fresh RO water. When the water evaporates out of the tank, the water is the only thing that is removed. Salt, metals, etc. say in the tank. If you top off with tap water, there will be a gradual increase in all of the bad stuff that you don't want, and would likely slowly poison your tank.

Doing water changes with tap water isn't the greatest thing, but you are removing a certain amount of impurities, and replacing them. Topping off with tap water increases the impurities.

I'm not an expert, so if this is wrong someone correct me. But it seems logical.

would it be ok to use tap water just for while it cycles with live rock and then before i add fish do a water change with store bought drinking water? and from then on only do water changes with that?

That'd be fine probably. What kind of drinking water?

I actually did my nano the opposite, used a friends RO unit to fill it up (thanks itstheantitang), and use tap water for changes.

That is what I did. I also have a 29gal tank and used tap water to fill my tank. Cycled for 4 weeks with live rock and switched from cc to live sand. I use ro water from lfs to top off and mixed saltwater for water changes. I ran into problems early on in the cycle, but after 4 weeks, everything was ok. Make sure that you cycle for at least 4 weeks and use tap water conditioner. Anything you put in before the completion of the cylce might die.

we are comming home with a 100 gal. tonight bought used with stand off craigslist for 100 (ill post pics +other questions later hehe) but are gonna take it slow to set up. we will prolly get sand for it and fill it up next weekend. since this is the first time setting it up would it be ok to put in the tap water and add the salt mix in the tank itself or should i still do it and leave it out a day (something i didnt even know needed to be done til yesterday!) then we are prolly gonna add a few pounds of live rock and slowly build it up over months. do i still need to do water changes when i only have live rock in there?

i dunno what kind, jsut the stuff thats on sale at cala prolly. isnt all bottled drinking water RO or DI? if not is there a way i can tell?

You'd be better off waiting and going to your lfs they will have the water cheaper than the lfs. Some, drinking water isn't of very good quality. You'll also want to get yourself a good s.w. test kit.
