My new set-up came with a glass cover. Unfortunately, one front corner is chipped and the edges are sharp. Is there any kind of rubber trim I can apply to the front edge, and maybe the ends? (Something very narrow that will fit tightly to the glass and not interfere with the way the cover fits or lifts.) Or can I just use some electrician's tape and call it done?

Thanks, all.

Go to the automotive section of your local store, and get plastic car door edge guards.

Or get some mapp gas and melt it until its not sharp enough to cut you. Disclaimer: Do not perform this without glass working experience!

If practicable you should return it as damaged and get a replacement cover.

If not, I would get the finest sandpaper you can find and --very carefully, with gloves and safety glasses and working over a wastebasket--sand the sharp parts until they are sufficiently rounded off.

Or daub a dollop of silicone on the afflicted part. It will probably come loose over time but you can always re-daub as needed. To be super-cautious you could combine the last two operations.

The electrical tape is certainly a workable solution but is sufficiently unattractive I suspect it would annoy you over time (it would me at any rate). Plus the sharp glass will wear through it eventually.

How about this - get some clear tubing and slice horizontally thru one side only. Then add a bead of silicone and fit over the glass. You could do this for the whole length of the glass. The tubing thickness will depend on your glass.

Emery cloth works well when glass is cut. That is what alot of glass cutters use to smooth the edges. you can get it at the hardware store in the plumbing section. When I cut glass I use it to ease the edge. It works good.

Wow, these are some great ideas, guys! I especially like the idea of the car door edging, nice and flat, but I already have lots of airline I could use ... decisions, decisions. I think I'll pass on trying to smooth/round off the glass. Since I tend toward uncoordinated, I can just see myself managing to get glass dust everywhere.

XanAvaloni, it was a used set-up so no returns. But no complaints, either, as I got a boatload of stuff!

What a helpful place this is. I've had a lot of fun reading through DYI threads. Might just have to add my own soon. :)
