Question for those who mix water with MJ600 pumps?

i have that powerhead in my 30 gallon tank with a prefilter. if a smaller fish swims in front of the outflow, the fish is promptly relocated to the other side of my tank. i must say that it has rather good flow.

i'd say there is probably an issue with your powerheads

So I took the pumps apart and were fiddling around with them. I don't see how the impeller is attached to the shaft. Nothing looks broken or anything. I fired up the pump with the bottom taken off and the impeller seems to be having a tough time spinning. Both pumps barely pump any water, one does seem a bit stronger than the other however. I guess I look into returning these if I can :( Bought em from Dr. Fosters and Smith

I would say there's definitely something not right here... I use a Mini-Jet 404, which produces about 1/3 less flow than the Maxi-Jet 600, to mix sw in a 5g bucket at work. I mix up 4g of sw at a time, as I don't need more than that for the tank in my office, and the Mini-Jet 404 "boils" the top of the water.

This was the kind of response I was looking for, thanks. I knew the MJ600 couldn't be this weak. What are the chances that both pumps I got are junk...

It's surprising to me that there'd be a problem with a MJ straight out of the box, as they are generally regarded as being durable and reliable. The ones I have I've been using for years without any problems (not even requiring an impeller replacement). It is possible, however, that something went wrong during a production run and you ended up with two faulty pumps from that same bad run. I'm not saying that's what happened, but those sorts of things do happen from time to time in industry.

Drs. F & S has excellent customer service... I'd be shocked if they didn't try to make things right for you, especially if you just bought the two MJ 600s.
