Question for those with sand...

I have sand in 2 out of 3 of my planted tanks and I havent had a problem with sand in the filters, possibly because the 29 and the 20 gallon runs a magnum 220 with a custom filtration media mix alternating with a micron filter every two weeks. But overall I think sand just has the best look to it especially in a planted tank and some good lighting.

Hey could some of you that have sand in your tank talk about your cleaning methods... How does siphoning sand differ from larger gravel..??

I too am thinking of going to sand.

Ryan, I don't always need to worry about siphoning the sand, since the bottom-dwellers keep stuff stirred up well enough that the filters get much of it. When I do, i simply use a hose for siphoning, and position the end of the hose near the sand, and siphon off the stuff. Occasionally I'll siphon off some sand, too, but not much, and it's cheap.
