Question on bamboo plants

Not sure on the time frame

I think the fish died within a few days after the bamboo was put in the tank.

are you running activated carbon filtration?

If not: it's a good idea to use, especially when adding anything of unknown origin, if you actually decide to even use something of unknown origin in your tank.

Ill say unless the bamboo was already rotting when you put it in the tank..it was chemical contamination on the bamboo. Was it sold for aquatic use at the pet store? How did it come packaged?

Just rearrange your post a bit...

Question: Is there any reason why my plants wont thrive?

Answer: I just have the basic lighting that comes with the tank. My plants did seem to die off when I treated the tank for ich.

The basic lighting in most aquatic setups is not sufficient for plants; it's often less than 1 watt per gallon, and really planted tanks start around 1.5 WPG, preferably more. And meds are often hard on plants, especially if weakened by low lighting.

Hmmm. I have bamboo, and was thinking about adding it to one of my bigger tanks. Right now I have it in with bettas, but they get a waterchange once a week and I always rinse off the bamboo roots and stems. They do get a little slimy. Guess I'll hold off on adding it to the others and just stick to the bettas.

There's nothing wrong with growing it, it's just not a truly aquatic plant. It needs to be out of the water in order to grow right.

Not to sound like a condescending jerk, but I would consider that someone who would randomly add a non-aquatic plant to their tank shows that they generally don't research things and therefore probably don't know well of what they are doing anyway. So it might have been something not related to the plant at all.

I have some lucky bamboo with its roots in my QT tank and have had it for a few years now. It helps keep down the nitrate. So I know well that the plant itself isn't toxic and nor should there be anything added to it that would be. In fact even if the thing were sprayed with pesticides they would be so diluted in a few gallons of water that there shouldn't be much worry for the fish. And if the thing rotted, it would take time and in a cycled tank I doubt highly that ammonia would come so much and so quickly to create any issues that would just up and kill off fish.

I'm not sure but I suggest looking elsewhere for the culprit.
