I was at Pet***** last night and I was looking at the bettas as I always do and I am developing a facination with female bettas. I saw a beautiful little girl who came right up to look at me and I fell in love. I was just wondering though, she has horizontal black stripes. Is that a wild type coloration? I saw some other females with stripes but they were vertical stripes. Any thoughts?

more than likely the bars are stress lines. The fish will go pale compared to its normal coloring and show the bars that you are seeing.
think about how much you would be stressed if you are stuck in a cup and the water you are living in is burning your gills and scales from the ammonia and you have kids come up and pick you up and shake the cup.

take the girl home give her a good home of a min. of 2.5g and good quality food and 78* water temp and good water and she will be your mistress then. LOL  :o

I agree that the horizontal lines are stress lines. Females also tend to show that when they see a male betta at first. I love the females, I think even more than the males! They seem so feisty!

Well, here is the next question. I would like to bring her home and 2 others and put them in a planted 10 gallon. Or am I asaking for trouble?

With just three..... it could work but I would do more like 5. It spreads the aggression out more. Just make sure you have plenty of plants and hidy holes. Now this is just what I have read about and heard works. I would love to have a sorority myself :D

Yeah their color can be different when you see them at the store. I bought a betta recently and I picked him out since he was a pale blue (I have a dark set up), but once I got him home and settled in his tank he turned dark blue with bright blue fins :)

Keeping female bettas together is difficult. If you want to try it, go with at least 5 and make it a heavily planted 20 long. Also, always have quarantines ready. Since the fish at the petstore are usually not fully grown, the pecking order of the sorority can change as the fish age. One day everything might be fine, and then betta B grows bigger than betta A and WHAM huge fight.

She is home now. And beautiful! Still striped but with beautiful sky blue fins. She is in the planted ten gallon with 4 peppered corys. So far she is very shy and hiding behind the heater but I am sure when she is comfortable I am going to keep an eye out to see how she does with the corys. I feel much better since I went and got her. I am afraid my addiction to bettas is in full force! LOL

It is very easy to be addicted :D I know the feeling
