i just took an awesome six hour canoe trip down the hillsborough river with my daughter. along the way, i spotted clusters of apple snail eggs. i stopped along some cypress stumps and grabbed a batch of them. what's the best way to hatch these? i'm assuming i don't just throw them in the aquarium correct? do i float them on something?

Put the eggs between paper napkins and mist the towel with water. Always keep it humid and never dries out.

If you put the egg clutches into the aquarium the baby snails will drown.

Also if you do not want to raise 100's of baby snails, break off a piece of the egg clutch and put it in the freezer or let them dry in the sun, and raise the remaining part.

if i float them above the water line on a grate, would that work? with my aquarium top on, it seems to stay pretty humid under there. they need to drop into the water don't they?

Yes that will work.
I often use a piece of thin styrofoam and just set the clutch on it. As long as there aren't large openings in the tank lid it's probably humid enough for them.
