Question on Hormones

As you may or may not have read, I had my hisonotus spawn recently. I had to go away for a while and just got back. I found a couple more fry, although it seems the majority of eggs got sucked into the filter. Not a problem, since I wasn't really planning on raising any fry yet, but in the future I will change the setup and attempt to get a bigger hatch.

Anyway, I am going to try triggering my zebra otos by adding some of the water from the hisonotus tank. I'm just wondering if the hormones will still be present (I believe they are), and if they will still have the same effect. It has been about a week since the last spawning. I'll try it either way, but was just looking for some input.

I wouldn't bet on it. Protiens tend to break down fairly quickly under normal tank conditions, and I wouldn't bet on the hormones being effective across species.

Thanks for the reply OG, I wondered how fast they would break down.

I've heard claims of hormones from one species triggering spawning in another species, however the evidence seemed to be anecdotal. It possibly could have been attributed to water conditions and not hormones. I was hoping for the best since otos and hisonotus are quite closely related. I won't get my hopes up, but it can't hurt to try right? If this doesn't work out I have a long list of experiments for trying to find their spawning trigger. If it does happen I'll be very lucky, considering it hasn't been done yet to my knowledge.
