Question probably a dumb one.....

Fish are not demanding about pH contrary to popular belief. However, the crushed coral would create high TDS conditions which are not ideal for an oscar.

i would have to agree with KarlTH most fish these days are not coming from the wild and are usually bred here in the states were most water is neutral to hardish with the exception of some rural areas were they have soft well water and or systems the thing is most fish will adapt to harder water but will not thrive and or live a full life but with just adding media that causes water to be harder and or higher in compounds is just unnecessary for certain fishes but again this is your hobby your the one who has to care for your intended animals in a small echosystem and all we can do is care for their needs so to say..

thanks again everyone for being ever so helpful...... these guys have become part of the family and I see no reason to change what has been working for the last year and 1/2...... I inherited the crushed coral and just thought I would try to save a buck to feed the oil mongers.... lol...... I'll keep it around in case I decide to do a African tank..... which could possibly happen..... its an addiction I cant help myself

yep those africans would love the crushed coral my friend take care

it's probably a good idea to get new substrate anyway, just because you don't know how dirty it is, or if it has "cooties" - that's the technical term.
