I have often have talks with my LFS about this topic -

Does hand gel have any effect on Tanks.

I use the stuff alot but my LFS has to maintain tanks in a couple of hospitals where it is required to use it, and he's not sure about it, hence why we'd like your imput:)

The alcohol portion of various gels is fine (ethanol, just like vodka), but the other ingredients are what are of concern. The scents, and other random things like acrylic polymers, (which give lend to the gel consistency in addition to glycerin compounds), other organics, etc. are what are not needed or wanted. It is not much different than soap in that regard. Light contact after rinsing with tap water would likely be acceptable, but working with it on an extended basis likely isn't too good. The damage may not even be external or visible, either. A better choice for hand sterilization would be a quick rinse in isopropyl alcohol, which isn't much different than the hand gel. A quick wipe with a towel and the rest should evaporate quickly. It should be cheaper than hand gel, too.
