how do i trim my plants when they get to large my vail ( :screwy:) thats what its called grown straight up and across the top of the tank just wondering if i cut it or will it harm the plant

As Sc indicated just cut it at about a 45° angle.

At some point you will get runners which will produce leaves also.

In order to transplant the infant plants just cut the runner.
