How long should you keep the Cichlid in the aquarium tank that has eggs in her mouth? How long should the mother stay in the breeding tank with her eggs? We have a breeding tank that drops the eggs on the bottom when the mother releases them. If the female is alone in the breeding tank with her eggs, will she release them or do we have to get them out of her?

you should leave her in the tank with the other fish for about a week and a half to two weeks after fertilization. while she is in her breeding tank after that, she will release the eggs as they hatch, and they will be freeswimming and follow her around the tank... remove her about one week after that, even sooner if you want

you need to tell us what kind of fish you're talking about. there are many types of mouthbrooding cichlids and the rules do not all apply the same. KYle

Yeah knowing which fish would be great... from what I recall they are malawi cichlids?

I would wait until she spits out the fry, which will be 2-4 weeks after fertalization depending on the species. She'll spit them out when she is ready. If you want, you can strip her and remove the fry yourself from her mouth, but that is only to be done under nessecary circumstances beacuse it is stressful on the mom. If you do, make sure the fry are developed and not still eggs or else they wont survive (you'd need to tumble them).

They are Malawi Cichlids, we are not sure kind it is, but it you look at pictures of Maylandia Aurora, she kind of looks like the female. If i can find what kind of fish it is, that is the right one, i'll tell you guys so you can help me. Thank you for your help.

I'm sorry, I gave you the wrong name, it's the Maylandia Callainos the looks more like that female we have.

Just waitntill she releases the fry's. On smaller malawi's it is 3 weeks otherwise 4 weeks.

Then feed her well, as much as she can eat three times a day to regain strength. Then put mom back into the main tank.

For the fry's, have small slates and stones so they can hide. Some moms do eat their fry!

For fry food, I use well grounded flakes.

Basically let mother nature take it course. :)

Good luck,

I usually remove holding mbuna mother from the main tank at around the two week point. They usually release all the fry within a few days to a week after that.

I return the mother to the main tank on the first night follow her releasing them, although some keep the mother with the fry for several days so she may regain strength prior to reintroduction to the main tank.

Mnubas

chevy girl i would recomend puting a divider in the existing tank to seperate the fry and give them small fry food. That way you can watch and give them individual attention without them being scared and hiding. i usually net the female and gently pry her mouth open so the fry drop out.

I don't have the fry yet, we only noticed that she had something in her mouth because she had a big mouth and she's not eating right now. I don't want to strip the fry or the eggs from her mouth because she is too small and I don't want to hurt her.
