Questions from an aquarium newbie

I wouldn't treat with Fungus Clear unless you notice sick fish.

That's the thing, I did have a fish in there before that had a fungus on it (Neon Tetra). I think when I bought the fish it was already sick, so I had to return it to the store for store credit as it only lasted two days in my tank before developing the fungus. It was removed and taken back to the LFS, but I don't know if I should still treat my water for fungus even though the fish that had it isn't there any more.

Also, even though I have a twenty gallon tank, I KNOW that it doesn't have 20 gallons of water. More like 15 gallons or so (I honestly am not sure, I'm guessing about 15 gallons). The rule of thumb is that I can't have more than 15 inches of fish in that tank. Is it okay to have more fish if I have good filtration?

A couple more questions that I just remembered about...

1. On a power filter that rates from 20 - 40, the low setting is for 20, middle for 30 and high for 40, right? It gives no indication on the instruction manual nor on the box.

2. Should I invest in an air pump for this type of aquarium? Maybe if I want to put more fish in there?

Your correct, after all the stuff is in the tank the water volume will be less, stick with the 20% range, about 1/4 on your tank, the one fish per gallon myth is just that, we have 14 fish in our 80 gal. and i believe that's enough because they will get big some day,IMO you have enough for that tank..Turn your fillter as high as it will go, you cant have to mutch filtration, you just dont want so mutch current that the fish cant swim,, an air pump is good for airation, put on a air stone or get a air valve and use 2 air stones, fish like them, it also helps eliminate dead spots in the tank...

I will definitely try to do a water change tonight then, put some water conditioner, and hope that the levels of RATES, RITES, and AMMO start to fall.

Is an air stone just a decoration that you connect to the air pump, or is it some sort of dissolving decoration that release oxygen?

I might buy one of those air pump connectors that are about 12 inches long and release bubbles. Can there be such a thing as too many bubbles?

A air stone goes on the end of the tubeing, and you can bairy it in the gravel it does not disolve, to many bubbles not realy, but if you have alot of bubbles you wont be able to see the fish,,we have on our 20 gal., 2 air stones,an air valve, and a 12 inch bubble bar in the back of the tank, air stones are towards the middle. a small air pump like a whisper 10 or 20 will work just fine....

By the way, here is a picture of the tank that I'm discussing.

I love the rocks that you have on the second tank. One day, when I get a house with an extra living room, I'm going with an 80 Gallon.

Do you just have a blue background on those tanks?

Yes 20 has blue construction paper, 80 has pet store shiny blue, the rock's are mostly slate, gravel is crushed coral, and some drift wood, check out the vid. on my last post....I added the other one also...

Very nice tank. It must take a long time to syphon out for cleanings.

About 15 min for about 25% wc, about the same to fill, i fill it slowly so the gravel does'nt get scatered....
