I have the space for a 5.5 gallon tank in my room above my tv and would love to get some rcs for it. I am looking to use it as a breeder for my danios (Glofish) as well. They would go in it for the night and then come out in the morning.

This is the setup I'm thinking.

Equipment
5.5 allglass aquarium
Screen top
Sponge filter
Air pump
Heater
It will have no light however as that wont fit on my shelf.

Decoration/substrate
Filter sand/ peagravel
A couple larger pieces of rock, Possibly lava
A piece of maylasian driftwood

Plants
java moss
Java fern
And other lowlight plants

Inhabitants
A couple snails. Any suggestions?
Of course some mts.
RCS
And if I'm not going to breed my danios would fancy guppies do well?

The point of this post is to see if this kind of setup would work.
What kind of snails would be good and not get huge?
What are some good low light plants?
What do fancy guppies take to grow?

Thanks in advance for the help.

well im not sure about this but if your tank gets no light nothing will probably grow. and second your fish will be freaking out if you put them in a different tank every day and night, plus if your getting rcs why wouldnt you want to see them? id say find a different spot for your tank

Glow fish (zebra danios) need a 20 long or more to breed other than those, sounds like a tank I have. Danios will eat the shrimp as will many others including guppies.

i'd just keep the shrimp in there without adding fish. fish don't like being switched around too much and the tank is pretty small. if you want to use the shrimp as feeders wait a few months for them to multiply and then throw some of the young in with the danios

The tank will get quite a bit of light from my room its self and I am thinking about just putting a light behind the shelf anyhow so that would add more. I think you were thinking it would be black and thats not the case.

Also I don't want to use my rcs as feeders. I want to keep them right there. The only time I would use them as feeders would be if they became overpopulated.

As for breeding my danios. I currently have them in a palaudarium that has 13g of water in it. I understand that that would be too small in most cases except that my tank is set up so that they have 36"x 8-12" of swimming room from one side to the other and a strong currnet. I find this sufficent as they only occupy the top region of water in a tank. For breeding them I plan on only taking them out once a month or so and putting them in the 5.5g for a night so that they can lay the eggs and not eat them.

shrimp will eat fish eggs as well, so it may not be the best plan in that regard. I wouldn't add a heavy bioload snail (like an apple snail) to that tank. If you have adequate algae you could try a nerite. I just got some zebra nerites in and they are quite lovely.

Hmm. More to think about. I don't particularly like apple snails anyway so thats okay.
I have 3 nerites at the moment and I love them. I wish they were zebras but they are just olives although one does have stripes they're just so tiny it looks like a solid color.

So how bad are guppys at harassing shrimp? I know my lfs has guppies in there tank that they keep their plants and shrimp in.

I would suggest keeping the tank, shrimp only. Plus the stresses of being moved are not going to allow your danio's to spawn in a night.

If you want to see the shrimp in your tank--keep it shrimp only. I added 3 tiny sparkling gouramis to my RCS tank and the shrimp all hide now. I only see them when I feed and the shrimp are almost bigger that the fish!
