Questions on using established filter media

Not sure, but our neighbors's kids have a ten gallon with two goldfish and those have been absolutely fine for a bit over 5 years now... (it is a ten gallon without a heater, filter or lights. They do a weekly waterchange and those fishes are happy.
Guess it depends on what type of goldies you have (or my neighbors are stupidly lucky...)

I do a weekly 10% water change and a 25% water change every 4th week. Also, all of my readings are good. They are your standard everyday goldfish that we got during a goldfish catch held in our community at a local wading pool - knowing what I know now, I can't imaging that this is healthy for the fish. At any rate, they have grown in size - one is approx. 4" and the other is approx. 3" and they both appear very healthy and happy, always coming to the glass when we enter the room, etc. I guess I don't know how large they may get, but given that the norm is 2" per gallon for goldfish, they have technically outgrown this tank.
