I have read when setting up the DSB , you install the sand then the LR

I have also heard you should set up the LR first then the sand. (stbility??)

which is the way you (members) set it up and why?

I'm on a fact finding mission

I would put a thin a layer of sand the bottom first, so that you don't somehow scratch or crack the glass with the rock, then put on the lr, then put on the remaining sand (most of it) around the lr to keep it stable.

Absolutely put the base rock in the tank first, then sand, then live rock above the sand. Main reason, sand settles and compacts, leaving a lot of movement to occur in the staking of the live rock which can lead to everything coming crashing down...very bad for fish or inverts, and even worse for glass! The reason for putting base rock first, not live rock, because it will halt the growth on the live rock to have it under sand. My tank is about 80% live rock, 20% base rock. All the base rock under the sand is still pure white and in about 3 months time, you cannot tell what was base rock or live rock in my tank as it sits above the sand.

thanks for the responses.

I learned (this weekend)that it would be wise to invest in a generator .
