What should the ratio of m/f be on GBR's? I just got a male (no females were available there) but found a source for females so I'm going to head out there tonight. I know usually you want a 1:2 m/f ratio but I've heard both 1:2 and 1:1 for GBR's. Should I get 1 or 2 little girls for my little guy? It's a 29g. If my little guy turns out to be a girl, would 2 or 3 girls get along okay?

Pairs are best because otherwise you run the risk of having a pair form and pick on the third... Or so I've been told?

That's also a possibility. However I have heard that enough space and the pair will leave the lone female alone...never tried it myself though.

It's a moderately planted 29g with rummies, harleys, otos and furcata rainbows. So I guess I'm leaning towards 2? I don't want the lone female to be picked on though... If I only get one and they don't pair up will the male pick on the female?

1m/1f is good enough with the size of the tank and some what safer even if they dont pair up. What if the male doesn't like both the females or the 2 females dont like eachother, You will more of a problem.

Another option is to get a larger group of juvies (6 or so) and let them pair off. When one is formed, return the others. You'll have a better chance of the pair coexisting.

tjroihenu: my male picked on my female constantly until she died from the stress. This was in a moderately planted 30 gallon. Believe me, if he is ready, he's ready.
