hey- some dude on craigslist is selling a 7 year old eheim 2017 filter with no media for 40 bucks. is the 2017 the same as the 2217?

its 7 years old...so maybe it might need some replacement parts. that's why i'm wondering if its the same as the eheim 2217, just an older model version.

I'd go with something that's a bit more maintenance friendly. Although I have never used one, the eheim filters look like a mess to take apart and cahnge floss, clean, etc. Have you tried modular filters? Fluval makes good ones.

Best wishes!

2017 should've been out of circulation for more than 15 yrs. Previous owner may have bought new but I bought 2217 in ealy 90's. Pretty much the same except Impeller & shaft. I believe 2017 has 2 pcs shaft rather than sigles shaft as in 2217. You may be able to find Impeller Assembly Set with single shaft that will work with 2017. Check to see how easy it is to find replacement parts (Impeller, shaft, O-ring, head covers, etc) before buyiing.
Eheim is best Quality Canister, IMHO. Have used FLuval, Rena, Magnum for comparison. Still believe in Eheim. I only have Dozen or so Eheim in storage to be used once I get back into hobby as mad as I used to be.

Off the topic a bit. How is weather in Buffalo? Is UB still standing? lol!
Havent been up there in over a decade! Actually, I miss the time spend up there (late 70's).
Hope this helped.

the weather is really windy today cerianthus! we just had a huge amount of rain the last few days so the creek near by house should crest soemtime soon...
ub is still standing and expanding too. they have the cockamanee idea to become some sort of international super-university or some such nonsense.

good point on the replacement parts. i found on big als a few parts ehre and there, but nothing like a ne wmotor head or impeller or shaft.

i contacted eheim and well, they got back to me saying this:
"The EHEIM 2017 was discontinued in 1983 most parts from the EHEIM 2217 will fit except the impeller. Please note that the impellers for the 2017 are no longer available."

maybe i can just use the eheim for parts depending i guess. if i do buy it i'll have to really baby the shaft!!!

the seller also says he can get back to me sometime tomorrow so i can take a closer look at what he has.

I use to live off campus by Main, near the field if it is still there. Cant remmber the name of name of street. It met Main St as T-intersection, I think. Chocolate Shop was near by or at Crossing.
Wow.I am talking some 30 yrs ago, I must be getting old? LOL!
If you want I can see what I have avail for 2017 Imperller and shaft. I always kept extra spares for my Many Eheims. some stuffs from late 70's as Metaframe Tank.
No guarantee if I have any. LMK since I really dont want to take Garage apart, although due for good Spring cleaning. lol

well i see what you're saying about UB. well, that campus you're talking about is now known as the south campus. they built a north campus in northern amherst some years ago. it houses most of the sciences, math, arts, the stadium, and a few
other odds and ends. the south campus is mostly for medical and dental students.

they have some retail shops on main street now and a supermarket. yet, i really don't get down to that end too often though. it is really cool though and i like the feel of the place more than the north campus.

check out UB, they have a website: www.buffalo.edu

that's a very nice offer about the eheim parts. this is certainly very interesting how this is all evolving!!! i will let you know what the deal is tomorrow if i do indeed decide to get it! will post lots and lots of pics too for the fun of the whole deal!

Although Lived on elicott complex for couple of yrs also, I preferred feel of Main StCampus. Do missed the Cafeteria at Squire Hall ! Not the food but atmosphere. LOL.
Thank you as this consversation made me feel young again, even for a brief moment.

Hope all goes well with the Tank Set Up!
