Quick Melafix and Pimafix Question

Melafix and Pimafix took API literally years to develop and test - doing lab studies on the correct dosage, the effects on different species, the effects on inverts or the biological filter, etc. I wouldn't recommend trying to make your own. And when using the manufactured products at the correct dosage there are no adverse effects on anabantoids.

Based on Anna Robinson's post, I thought I'd do a little search to see if there was any scientific studies or any proof that the use of Melafix/Pimafix is bad for anabantoids. Like many others, I have been going on the advice of hobbyists who say that it is bad and even have anecdotal experiences of this. I have not seen a study that proves it yet. IMHO, better safe than sorry, but I thought I'd check it out before parroting the advice I've been given. I only had time to do a quick search and want to do a more thorough one, but here's what I found on a quick search:

Check out this link: http://www.reefland.com/forum/marin...melafix-pimafix-how-they-work-don-t-work.html. The guy actually talked to an API representative about how Melafix actually works and what it's good for.

This thread also has a nice discussion about whether or not it works for anabantoids (bettas in specific). http://www.petfish.net/forum/index.php?action=printpage;topic=72434.0

pond version is the same just a bit more consentrated i buy only pond stuff,.
last longer and save more money,.. but harder to dose tiny tanks,..
difference between pima and mela is one treats fungus, one is bacteria,..

drawcak is you have to airate tanks with this as it affects the oxygen level,.. start first dose half strangth just to see if your fish is bothered by it and then add a bit more next day higher till the full strengh is met,..
some cories are affected at full strength,...
work great if caught fast,.. if a longer illness then re treat till looks better follow directions,..

I disagree with some of the points in the reefland.com article, but I won't go on about it here.

I agree that I would like more information on what bacteria Melafix acts against, but in some cases the information simply isn't known to science, as the action of Tea Tree oil is not fully understood. Results are what matter.

Dixie, Pimafix has anti-bacterial action as well. Melafix and Pimafix can be used together to treat a wider range of bacterial infections than either alone.

Pond Pimafix to 'standard' aquarium dosage of 5ml per 10 gallons:

2 parts pond Pimafix
3 parts water
i.e. 80ml pimafix + 120 ml H2O = 200ml (8 oz bottle size)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prime or Pond Melafix to 'standard' aquarium dosage of 5ml per 10 gallons:

1 parts Prime or Pond Melafix
4 parts water
i.e. 80ml prime + 320 ml H2O = 400ml

A glass 16 oz/500ml measuring cup works well. I used distilled water cuz that's what I had, not sure if it's necessary.
