Quickret sand

You might be able to get away with it, but most of the Quikcrete play sand I've seen had too large of a grain size to work properly for a deep sand bed...assuming that's what you're going for.

Here's a DSB article you may find helpful: http://www.rshimek.com/reef/sediment.htm

Southdown/OldKastle sand isn't available on the left coast so I went with sugar-sized silica based sandblasting sand and it's worked out very well for me.

Where did you get your sandblasting sand? What does the bag look like? I'm just curious because we live in the same area, and since your choice of sand worked well, I want to get a couple of bags for myself.

I got my sand at:
Rental Service Corp./Prime Equipment
2177 Jerrold Ave.
SF, CA 94124
415-282-7290

It's kinda off of Evans St. between Army St. and 3rd St.....over in that area.

It comes in unmarked beige 100 pound bags for $15 each (in March 2002). It's not on display; it's stacked up in the warehouse in the back. I think they have small samples of all their sand in the front office though.

By the way, expect a REALLY weird look when you tell them what it's gonna be used for

Edit: Oh, if you do want to get aragonite sand, you could pick some up at Tropical Paradise in San Leandro... (510) 614-1011. I think they charge something like $20 for 40 pounds, but don't quote me on that.
