My old Fluval 403 just died on me a couple days ago, about time that thing just gave out. Now I need a new canister for my 100 gallon. I need something really quiet since my tank is right behind my bed. If anyone can recommend me a quiet canister filter for a 100 gallon that isn't to pricey it would be awesome.

Ford,
Research the Filstar XP filters. I have an Xp2 and an Xp3 running on my 100 gal. oscar, jack dempsey tank and love them. I have read many people only have an XP2 running on their tanks, but mine has a bunch of pigs in it. Sometimes I have to touch the tops of the filters to make sure they are running, and they are easy to clean with the lift out baskets. I think the XP2 is rated at 300 gph, and the XP3 is at 350 gph. Mine have been running now almost a year and a half with not problems. I plan on buying more of them as I acquire new tanks.

...... I would think that most cannisters would be quiet.
I agree with that...
I like the Rena Filstar Xp-3. No more Fluvals for me..

Silent = Eheim, Quiet = Fistar

Best value over the life of the filter = Eheim Classic

Eheims are not pretty quiet, or virtually silent, they are totally silent. They make no noise whatsoever. The only way to tell if they are running is to put your hand on them. I don't know of any other filter for which that is true.
