I'm looking into getting a newer, less noisy filter for my 29 gal. freshwater tank.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a good filter that's fairly quiet?

The only quiet filters I've had are internal ones. I've got a Fluval myself, and when I lay it on it's side it's almost silent. The problem with the internals is you have to get your hands into the tank when it's time to rinse out the filter media. Also, they're a little unsightly, so they need to be disguised with plants.

yes i would put a aquaclear on there.they are the best filters on the market.

I agree with the AC brand. They tend to be very quiet and have a lifetime warranty on them. I myself have one and have never had a problem with it.

I have moved this to the Freshwater Products & DIY section as you may get better help.

I have an AquaClear 300 that used to be fairly silent. Now it makes quite a bit of noise.

I'm wondering if too much sand has gotten in there over the years and is the source for the grinding sound I get.

Maybe I should just invest in a new motor... are those usually sold at lfs?

I took my AquaClear back when it was brand new because of the noise. I tried another one and same noise. Maybe I'm just unlucky with Aquaclears, but I personally couldn't classify it as a quiet filter.

Even with a sponge in the ouput, my AC made some noise. High end cannisters, internals, and RFUG are all silent. any hob will make some noise. of all of the Hob's the emporers, and the AC's have been the quietest for me. Penguins come in third, but are considerably noisier than the Emps and AC's. the water level is the main factor in HOb noise, so keeping a high water level will help your cause, but silence is still impossible with a filter tha cacades water back into the tank.

Waht you ahve to decide is are you after silent or just really quiet. If rally quiet is the goal an AC would work, or an emporer.

If you want silence, RFUG, internal filters or good cannisters are the only real options.

The new AC filters should be fine. I got a 50 in my bedroom and i can barely hear it. If quiets your main thing then get a whisper by tetra.
