Quikcrete All Purpose Sand

After some more digging around on the Quikrete website trying to see if the product in question ( Quikrete all purpose sand) is indeed good to use, i came to a conclusion. It is safe to use. This product IS NOT ecotoxic, meaning its not harmful to birds, plants, humans, FISH, etc.

The said product is prewashed but im still going to wash it again to be safe. Based on the data i read, any sand or gravel can be harmful if you breathe in the dust or contact with the eye occurs so just be safe when washing it.

When i get this product in my tank and try it out ill try to update this with an actual trial and error post to help anyone else looking to use this product.

This may have been missed earlier, but I would really use their play sand, not the all-purpose. When I was on another forum, a couple of years back, this same issue came up, and one of the members contacted Quikrete about their sands, indicating it was for a fish tank. Quikrete gave a detailed response, that their play sand is given several processes to ensure it is not in any way rough. Their other sands are not. And no chemicals get into the play sand, which is not the guarantee with other types, and the other sands are run through the machines which also process chemicals. Play sand is only processed with clean machines.

The play sand is "pre washed" but this does not refer to minute particles; it takes a lot of rinsing, but in the end it is worth it.

I use playsand (quickrete).. it's used in w lightly planted tank as well as thin layer 1" in a 20 l (Blue ram tank) and thin layer (just enough to cover the bottom)
it actually vac's easily and with MTS (trumpet snails) it does not compact.
I did see quite a bit rinse off when cleaning( it took quite some time )
I plan on using PFS on my next tanks( more to see if there is a difference)

I'm always intrigued by the 'sand threads' and enjoy learning from them.

What kills me is the love/hate thing. "It can wipe out your filter impellers". "It compacted like concrete and stunk horribly when I broke down and cleaned the tank".. just to name a few negatives.

To me it seems like gravel is more fool proof, but I'm sure I'll try sand at some point. I do like the way it looks over gravel.

Byron i didnt miss the suggestion you pointed out and the extra bit of info you and StarRider just gave deffinately make me feel it may be safer to use the play sand instead of this. Ill go back to the store sometime this week to see if they have any play sand or pool filter sand. Id rather not risk any foreign debris from machines in my tank. Thanks fellas :)

Freshy, gravel and sand both have their pros and cons but i feel sand is way easier to care for. If your afriad of it compacting you could always run a dowel through it every couple of days just to make sure it doesnt.
