Radiata Lion - Not Too Hungry

Yes, the old stick trick; this has been done with good success.

Right i have a plan......

Today I will get a see through feeding stick and try the lance fish thing… shall I soak it in garlic or something? At the same time I will drop some mysis in.

If I can get him to eat the lance fish … great! At least he is eating! Where do I go from there. I have got frozen Krill, Atemia, Mysis, lance fish presuming he will eat all of these is this a balanced enough diet for him? I heard something about cyclop-eze anyone had a lion eating this.

result. ... he eat a whole lancefish (frozen) i did have to feed him by hand as my lfs had no feeding sticks... phew i can relax now... i will give it a couple of days and give him another lance fish then a couple more days and i will start to mix it up.. squid, krill, prawn ect

any thoughts anyone....

one more thing prob something monoS can answer is it normal for the radiata to tend to shudder alone the substate using pec fins rather than swim along??

:bday: :bday: :bday: YAY!!

As for the feeding sticks, you could just make one (you're just asking to get stung hand feeding). You could probably just spear the food on the end of a chopstick.

I'm guessing (you'll want to get a more expert opinion on this probably) that its O.K. A lot of lions don't swim to much, they just kind of float along lazily...

Radiatas in particular are a little more passive/secretive than say, a Volitan in captivity. They appreciate a large cave which they usually hang in a head down position. Recently during a trip to Disney, I noticed they had the biggest Radiata I've ever seen on display here in Orlando at the Living Seas exhibit in Epcot. Sure enough, it was hanging upside down in a cave. In the Pacific, I have seen Volitans actively hunting small minnows, but never encountered a Radiata.

there are a few caves in my tank but none that can allow him to relax with all his finage as he likes, i will move some stuff around once he is a little more settled

That's a great idea, from what I have seen/read, Lionfish require this dark retreat/shelf/cave. Fenner has written that many Lions are blinded by aquarium lighting that is too powerful for them. Typically found clinging or perched beneath overhangs during the day, they emerge on the reef about dusk to hunt... fascinating creatures to watch in the wild, we saw them near German Channel and on one of the sunken Japanese ships in Palau.

Ok a quick update, I built him a nice big cave which he has started using

as far as feeding goes i have managed to get him to eat lance fish, and Krill... such a prima donna will make no effort to eat only eating krill landing right infront of his nose! and then later scavanging for krill that has landed on the sand. He is not eating the mysis shrimp at all. Will the above two be enough for him in the short term??

Also i got him a little treat a very small yellow tail damsel however he shows no interest in him after a couple of days so i shipped him into the clown tank for now! I know radiatas in the wild prefer shrimp and stuff as apose to fish but i thought he would give the fish a go,

I'm repeating myself here, but;
Variety and underfeeding is the key to a healthy Lionfish diet.
Krill is okay as part of the diet, but you must rotate with fresh chopped squid, shrimp, silversides, krill, (frozen or freeze dried). IME, a live food treat now and then (one a month or less) of ghost shrimp or crickets will be appreciated. None of these should be allowed to become a single food item, there are some authors who site complications with lionfishes related to a diet of krill only--including blindness, and for those of you who pounced on the fresh water guppies, I was very clear about using them as a last resort, to induce feeding NOT a regular food item. :mad2:
That cave should work out well for you just make sure it's stable, best wishes for your Lionfish my friend.

Update....

Good news he now will eat anything i place in the tank.

I now roatate his meals i have silversides, Krill, Mysis Shrimp, Muscles, and his favourite octpus. Hopefully i can keep him heathy for many years!
