I recently purchased a rainbow shark and its in a 30g with 4 cherry barbs and a dwarf gourami im wondering what to get next but im not sure whats near enough to 100% compatable im thinking flying foxes or pictus catfish???? any thing wrong with them?? i would love to hear your suggestions.p.s the barbs and gourami are moving in time for the new arivals.

I have a couple Rainbow Sharks (check my siggy). One of my favorite fish. One of mine likes to chase the Cherry Barbs around the tank. I'm assuming it's because of the red tail and the fact that they like to hang around his area. Both of my Rainbows chase their SAE tankmates (similar to the Flying Fox). They never seem to do any damage and it seems that none of the fish are any worse for the wear. I believe a Rainbow is always gonna find someone in the tank to pick on. :) The Pictus cats and the Rainbow get along just fine and never bother each other. However, I believe a Pictus would be very crowded in a 30g tank. I'm pretty sure quite a few folks will tell you that the 30g will end up being to small for the Rainbow as well, but I think it will work at least for a while.

Rainbow sharks tend to start bullying anything with a similar shape to themselves. I would steer clear of flying foxes for this reason. I believe my albino rainbow killed my panda cories as well so those probably aren't a good idea. Mine did okay with yoyo loaches and zebra loaches though. If you go with cories, I would pick a larger species. I found the rainbow shark was too aggressive for my tastes and sold him at auction. They are a beautiful fish though.

Yes i see what you mean but i love rainbow sharks soo much i want it to be the centrepiece of my tank. Fair enough 30g is not enough, but christmas soon so 55 then probably i just want some fish that will get along with it as i dont want it on its own. Its annoying being 15 as i dont usualy get the kind of money for a 55 so a 30 will suffice for now (i hope)

A 30 will do fine for now, but a 55 would be much better. You should get him a cave to hide in. He will probably spend alot of time in there, but he will like it much better than having to stay out in the open and it will help curb aggression as well since he wont always be looking at the other fish.

i do have 2 pieces of wood and he hides in the gaps of one while the gourami might go to the other piece when he gets chased. Thats why they are at opposite ends of the tank. Although i know its 30g but theres lots of mid and top level swimming space that he enjoys every now and again. I just hope the gourmai is ok because he does get picked on alot when he goes close to his "home" but when the barbs go in the hideout he doesn't give a whoot.

I expect its beacause hes on his own. If i got more gouramis maybe. But nowhere to put him at the moment as i havent got the money untill christmas and if hes distracted by somthing else he could leave him alone.

That shows how much personality those sharks have... because mine doesn't give a hoot about my Gourami! lol.
