I am just SICK to my stomach over this....... :cry:
Last night I completed the switch from my 55g to my 75g. I had my 5 rainbow sharks, silver dollar, ghost knife, and small pleco in a small 10g tank with established heated water until time came to move them over. I had just added AquaSafe when I moved the sharks over. It was less than a minute and they started freakin' out, then acting drunk and floating to the bottom, etc. The moment I realized they were in distress, I started to take them out. I managed to get 3 out, then watched as 1 spun in a big circle, then started shaking violently, almost as if he was having a seizure. I took him out and put him back in the original tank with the others. I went to get the 5th one and he too was acting weird, and shot straight down, nose first in the sand and just sort of stuck there. I scooped him up and put him in with the others. Needless to say, the 3 I got out first have made it, but the last 2 didn't. Sadly 1 of them was my biggest, almost 5" long and my oldest fish.
The ghost knife acted funny too, so I almost took him out, but he seemed to snap out of it. The pleco (who is just under 2" long) and the silver dollar seemed to tolerate the move alright.
After about an hour, I moved the remaining 3 back over to the new tank, watched 'em very carefully, and everyone was fine.
Forgive me... I did not test any of my waters before I put the fish in, but I figured it'd be alright since 80% of the water was originally established in my 55g. I did top off the rest with tap water of the same temperature, and put Aquasafe in. And the tank temperatures were all about the same, plus or minus 2 or 3 degrees.
Has anyone ever had a fish do that before? It was SO incredibly painful to watch, there was no way I could get to him fast enough to get him back to the original tank. I wish I would've waited longer for the water to neutralize. I feel like I just lost one of my kids. :help:
