rainbowfish in 55 gallon

They may not be scientifically as active, but they have twice the vertical body mass and tend to swim near the glass, so they appear more present.
Eh? Where did you hear that? My rainbows, unless I'm not in the room or they are not playing in the filter outflow, are always at the front watching me.

As for body mass, unless you are referring to giant gouramis, I've never seen a gourami with the body mass of an adult Boesemani. Please refer me to some site that lists how deep they get. I'd like to compare them.

Maybe we're talking about different kinds of rainbows and I've been getting the wrong kind.

The rainbows I had were only about a inch from top to bottom. Gouramis, Pearl/3spot/blue, were 1.5 to 1 inches high.

ROFL! Well, that explains it either they were babies or they certainly weren't Boesemani. Mine were about an inch when I got them and I'd say still close to an inch or so, but they're not adults yet.

Once they mature they are often 2.5-3" in depth. Some are even bigger, but those, from what I understand, are ones that are overfed.

so rainbowfish are definately a good choice then! I was more worried about their aggession, but I don't think that will be a problem! thanks guys! :thm:

pophead is that 8 inch pleco a common? If so, you might want to sell it, give it away, or take it to a store for a trade-in. I once had a common pleco that outgrew my 90 gallon. That will also reduce your tank load a lot and give you more options (larger school for example).

no it's a sailfin, which I think still gets pretty big. I am not too worried right now about his size, I know that they can grow fast but he has only grown about 3 inches in a year. eventually I will get a bigger tank and move him into it, but right now 55g is the biggest I've got :(

My rainbows were australian rainbows. I don't know the scientific name. Definitely a different variety. I'll have to look for your variety. It sounds interesting.

Redtail again you aren't correct. Boesemanies and most rainbowfish I've seen have about the same vertical height as most gouramies. Rainbowfish are also thicker fish.

For this interested in learning about rainbowfish, this is the best site I know: Home of the Rainbowfish

Boesemani profile

Pophead I forgot to mention that angelfish can be stressed by fast moving fish. Rainbows, especially boesemanies, can get to be a good size and are constantly moving so they might not be the best choice.

Also, if your sailfin is only growing 3 inches a year that is a good indication the fish is being stunted. Also could be caused by not enough clean water and poor diet.

yes, I realize the problem I have with my angel. I can't exactly get rid of him though, because he's not mine. for now he seems happy with a bala shark we have in the tank, I will eventually move the angel out though.... don't know when.
