Rainbows in a 40 ?

Does Tanner ever offer sets of 4? All I see on AquaBid are 6s.
He only sells in sixes. Try emailing him and see if he'll sell you 4s, Unca. Dunno if he will, but it doesn't hurt to ask. You have to email him if you don't have a trader rating on AquaBid anyhow. He likes to do a "background" check. Tell him I sent you, Eileen Kortright :)

Yah, I can see you mixing those fish and they'll school. They won't be as happy as with a group of 6 each, but it's not that bad a mix.

Thanks, Eileen!
Funny thing, I stopped by one of our local stores yesterday and they have a sale going on. I could get a 75 for less than a 40! But I have no place to put a 75!!!
MAKE room :)

I would! :D

Okay, make that a 65g. It will fit and I can get one cheaper than what I would have paid for the 40!

So now I'm thinking 6 parvas, 6 praecox, 6 incisus and a clean-up crew, maybe a couple twig cats and a few red lip botias. Hows that sound?

Reassess. Do you really need that much height? A 65g is a VERY tall tank and rainbows are mid level schoolers. I have a 65g in my son's room because silver dollars are pretty tall fish. It's 24" high!

The 75g is 48x18x20. What you need is a 36x18x20, which would be perfect, imho. Of course they don't make that as a standard size  You could take a look at a 50g, which is 36x18x18 and that would be even cheaper, I think, than a 65g. Or even consider a a "custom" sized tank? Check out http://www.glasscages.com they're pretty cheap.

Hrm. Tank might be too small for the twigs. Depends on which ones you get. I think there are two different types and the Royal will definitely be too big for that tank.

I do want to add that there isn't a lot of info on the pseudoincisus. Everything I've read say they grow to ~3", however, mine are really small. They are starting to color up, so they're at least 2 months old, but when I compare them to my parvas, of which some are the same age and are supposed to grow to the same size, they ARE small. Anyhow, basing the following on the premise that they *will* grow to ~3", even if I don't really think they will:

I think 18 fish would be pushing it a bit. IME rainbows need a lot of room to flourish well. I've 13 Boesemani in my 75g and it's not crowded per se, I could probably throw in 3 more and call it done, but six of my fish are babies/juvies (1½-2½") and I'm going to wait and see how it goes once they get 3".

I definitely would say yes to those 18 in a 75g. No problem there, but with a 36" you are losing a foot of schooling space.

Since you are obviously limited to 36", why don't you start with 12 of your absolute favorites? Then see how much space you have and then add the other six if you feel it will work.

Also, bear in mind that Tanner will usually NOT ship you six fish, he will usually ship EIGHT, so you could end up with 24 fish, not 18 :)

Okay, forget the praecox. I'll check out the customs. The twigs I looked at are supposed to get to 5-6 inches.

Which twigs are they? I was looking for some and all I found were Royals.

I have otos in my 20, I was thinking of getting something different for the new 40/50/65/75/whatever.

If I get the rainbows for the mid levels and botias for the lower levels, how about a school of dither fish for the top? White clouds, maybe?
