Rainbows in a 40 ?

Tetras use the middle. If you have to have top fish, maybe rasboras or hatchets, but be aware that juvie rainbows hang closer to the surface than mature ones. The younger they are, the closer to the top.

ROFL!

I'm going, on Monday, to Tropical Fish World in Gaithersburg, MD. They just got a decent-sized school of wanamensis in (17 of them) and if they aren't gone when I get there, I'm bringing them home.

Get this: $16 EACH

Apparently they are all around 3", so they are fairly mature, and they ARE a rare fish, but, geez man!

PS
That's one of my juvie Millennium rainbowfish in my avatar :)

guess i am in the same boat again. guppies/livebearers just isnt for me.

hey roan, i searched everywhere for a smiliar sized YELLOW rainbow to go with the flame parva(definitly getting 6 of them), but no luck. My tank has a pure black background, so i need some lighter colored fish to make it look nice. Any ideas?

I really want Melanotaenia herbertaxelrodi but understand they can get to 4-5" which is bigger than the 3" flame parva, is it a big problem to have them together? are there any 3" yellow rainbow? My tank will be a rainbow species tank, the only other resident are about 30-40 cherry red shrimps.

thanks!

Depends on how big the tank is, really. Herbies do get big, yah, 5-6".

The only one I can find that stays small is Melanotaenia maccullochi and there are several color variations:

Some of them have a yellow cast and yellowy fins, those aren't commonly found around here. Most have red fins and a yellow cast to their bodies. Black stripes on all of them. Pretty fish, IMO.

Only other ones with yellow on them grow 5-6".
