See- its hard to sex rams! There was another post recently where we went over sexing rams- and I think we debunked one or two other myths/methods - perhaps we just debunked a third? (although I still think two females) I think the pink belly is the only thing I have never seen debated - its a sure sign of a female. (Okay- now where's the guy with a photo of a male with a red belly!)
I believe they are harem breeders, not pairs. Its normal for many females to spawn with one dominant male. Don't get me wrong, the females will tough it out with each other if they both like the same spot- but they tend to keep much much smaller territories and usually only when they are ready to spawn or protecting eggs or fry. They have a rock they like, or a bend in the driftwood- the males rove around more and tend to look for trouble- they have a "side of the tank" instead of a rock or cave.
