ok so heres the deal a while ago i was pretty sure my male and female rams had paired they would follow each other around and all that but now whenever the male sees the female it will chase it off and bite it i am getting worried that the female might die from stress or injury

is this normal or should i remove it from the tank?

there is a little tuby thingy protruding from the females underside is this a sign that they will mate?

i used some peat in my filter for a while did water changes turned water temp up...i tried every thing that i know of to get them to mate but nuthin worked

thanx

To be honest with you, I have no experience with breeding rams. But I have bred angels. In the angels breeding, both the male and female had those protrusions from their undersides; the female laid eggs, the male fertilized them. So hopefully, by seeing that, your rams will successfully breed. As far as the water changes and peat: sometimes patience is the key, you've done everything you can, so just sit back, relax, and be patient. HTH :D

This is not uncommon for Rams. They are feisty little devils from time to time. If you fear one of them is injured or is prone to being badly injured then divide the tank with more plants, and other decor to break up the general field of vision.
The protrusion is most likely a gonopodium (though this term might be technically only correct to use with livebearers...). Either that or she has been eating to much :)

ive read that some rams are injected to make them prettier and this makes them sterile, also that your ph has to be wicked low for the eggs to survive

thanks tim bo that article gave me a few ideas. Im gonna go to the store tomorrow and get a timer socket for my light, some more peat, and i just added in a verey smooth slate stone in a calm place in the water.

thanks

thanks Tim Bo

Update!
i did large water change, added some real driftwood and now they have stopped fighting and are following each other around
could this mean they are getting ready to spaawn?

and BTW my pleco likes the driftwood but will my oto munch on the wood too?
