Rams: Belgian vs German, etc

yes, driftwood is my project for today. The experts on the cichlid forum seem to feel that driftwood is very important for rams. Also, from what I understand, Bolivians are somewhat more hardy than Blues. And my Bolivians were $8. (and could have been less if I had gone to the fish store on Saturday when they are always 1/3 off!)

The sand has been a great addition. Today I'm going to do the first water change / bottom vacuum since the new sand. Not really certain how that will go....we'll see.

I just watched the video! Wow! I know what I need to know now!

My next question is how to clean sand that has plants planted in it. I'd want to mix the sand up to get out gasses but how to do that without uprooting the plants or leaving behind gasses.

I noticed that Joe had rocks.

Well when I had the tank really well planted I never really stirred up the sand. I did in the open area's where I could but not around root structures and they do a good enough job of holding it all together anyway. Even after 2-3 months, sometimes more, if I uprooted a plant for whatever reason I'd still get very few bubbles from the build-up and never had any problems with that release.

If you're doing a planted tank with decent lighting you'll be taking the plants up quite frequently to trim and replant anyway, so if you really want to you can just use this as the opportunity to give the sand a turn...

:)

Great post, I don't usually buy fish at petland, but they just got Bolivian Rams in, which I have not seen in a while.

She is so pretty! I have one like her, I love her. she is the only one in the tank, I would get her a a few play mates but I worry since I am not sure what sex she/he is.

I'm a new ram lover too. I have three bolivans and four german gold rams. The bolivians are sweet, I like the way they move around the tank but in my opinion the german gold rams are absolutely gorgeous. :)

I'm definitely hooked on peaceful cichlids I think.
