How many rams (blue or gold, not Bolivian) can be comfortably kept in a standard 10gallon tank, providing there are no other lower water fish except maybe a couple of otos?

thanks

A single Ram. I don't and will never suggest anyone put a pair in anything less than a 20 Long. If they have issues in a 10g one is gonna end up seriously injured or dead, the 20s give a pair a little more room to get away from each other.

I've seen 1 pair in a 10..
would I recommend it?
No
I'd suggest a 15 but preferably a 20

Ok thanks. are there any dwarf cichlids that could work in a 10?

the real problem is getting a few dwarves then dealing with the fallout if and or when a pair form..

rams will work blues are slightly smaller than bolivians ..but I can;t see just one of any dwarf or other cichlid...LOL

you could get a couple and move them in but watch to see how they react..at the LFS ,in a tank where there are a lot of other fish same species or not you cannot see agression issues.. structure in a tank help disperse agression(after all is said and done..these are still cichlids).

if you have a 10 and put structure(driftwood and plants) you can disperse some of the agression..
the real big issue I see with any 10 gallon..it's a small set up and subject to chnges quickly..

it's one reason I like a slightly bigger set up..more water helps make the tank more stable.

So I could keep a single blue ram? Or I could house two blue rams if there was plenty of wood etc,? (I have another tank I could move one to if there was trouble). I haven't really seen any apistos around ever, except cockatoos which are ridiculously expensive.

you could house a pair..the problem comes in the fact that you can't predetermine the pair.

the best way is to house 2 females with 1 male..when a pair forms..remove the loner.

rams love structure..I have driftwood and a screen of java fern attached to driftwood..I also have slate piles with caves(the rams don't usitlize the caves much tho.) but they love to suspend over the slate and one pair spawns on the slate..the other spawns in gravel and on the driftwood.

the pairs I have live together pretty peacefully in a 20 even at spawn time..I think mostly due to the java fern wall I have.

Try it- one pair in the 10 without any other fish right now. I have 3 Rams in my 15H and they are among the most peaceful and interesting fish I have ever owned. Though the 15 gives them extra room to explore and swim in they should be ok in the 10. Keep on top of the aparameters and see how they adjust to your tank. Good luck.

Thanks for the help, everyone! I'll see how it goes with a pair, or I might try 2 females and one male. Thanks again,
momar
