Those are my male and female.....awesome fish. I would say yes you could put 2 in a 10 gallon. Careful what else you put in there with them....and not too much else. Corys would be great...cardinal/neon tetras maybe. You have some options....also make sure you get a male and female...much like many other fish, 2 males will fight.
there are a few common type of rams. the dutch/german varieties being the most colourful. they are difficult to sex when younger. males tend to be more colourful with more elegant fins. nice fish
Just curious...what turned you off from them? As far as other suggestions for a 10 gallon....there are a ton of possibilites. Have you checked out Dwarf Puffers? Awesome little fish. Read up on the them before getting them though www.dwarfpuffers.com 2 or 3 would be good for your 10 gallon.
I'd recommend dwarf puffers only if you really know your stuff...definitely not beginner fish, they're VERY difficult to take care of (massive water changes every week, picky feeding habits, require LOTS of attention)

Actually they are quite hardy fish. As long as you dont try to feed them flake food and put them with compatiable tankmates they really are not very difficult. Also just read your post (below) Oddball and yes I agree I have had a much more difficult time taking care of Rams than Dwarf Puffers
