I have very soft water from my tap (KH of about 60) that runs a PH of about 7.8 on average. I had very little trouble with egg fungus. Most of the time the parents took care of the eggs and fry...for a while anyway. The greatest batch was the first one I ever raised. The eggs were layed on a small rock which I removed and put in a 15 that was all set up and ready. I got over 75 fry and just about all of them survived. That was a great batch....which that last fella in the pics I posted came from. I wish I had kept a lot more of them !!
I had one pair take care of the fry for as long as 2 weeks before they swallowed them. Had them in a planted 20 long with no other fish. I wasn't interested in raising any at the time and it was interesting watching the parents take care of them.
If you do get a successful spawn...make sure you remove the fry if you want to raise them. Especially if there are other fish in the tank. The rams will eat the fry if they feel stressed by intruders. They figure if someone's going to end up eating them...it may as well be them...lol.
Have fun and hope you have success breeding them.
