I would like to stock my 20 gallon with blue rams and a butterfly fish, but i am unsure that they would be compadable. I want my rams to breed.. would the butterfly infringe? Would a bottom dweller infringe?

i dont think a 20 is suitable for a butterfly cichlid... i may be wrong though. even so i think it would infringe with the rams. Beware you need a pair to breed rams though.

What about fishy immaculate conception? :lipssealedsmilie:

I get the impression that the OP is referring to the African butterfly fish. I wouldn't think that a 20 gallon would afford this fish enough space IMHO. If you are serious about breeding rams, I would encourage you to look into just keeping only a pair in your tank. Not only does this rule out the possibility of predation due to tankmates, but understocking will allow you to keep water quality excellent as to encourage spawning.

What is a butterfly cichlid?

Regarding the African butterfly I would have to agree with Mama

would rams breed in a 10 gallon?
could i keep them in a 20 or 29 gallon with african cichlids?

I would definitely advise against a pair of Rams in a 10. I have a proven pair in a 20 long and I often feel guilty that they do not have enough space. A 29 would give room for some top dwelling species, such as tetras but if you are looking to raise fry, tetras are fast and love a good snack (which will stress out the parents)!
As far as tank mates, anything that can eat the fry will. Anything that will invade their space when they are tending to the fry/eggs is not really a good idea. JMO...

Also African cichlids have much different needs/requirements than SA/CA cichlids. It is not a good idea to mix the two....

would rams breed in a 10 gallon?
It's possible, but not a good idea. They need more space.

NO. Absolutely not, as was explained in your other thread. ;)
