Ramshorn shells very soft

good lord ... read the post

the pH is low because I haven't changed the water for a week and a half...3rd times a charm I guess

and for future referrence a pH under 6.0 is dangerous...anything between 6.0 and 8.0 is fine

True for fish and some inverts.

All snails (and most crustaceans) I know of prefer a pH minimum of 7.4. Won't kill them short term to be lower but will errode their shells slowly.

I need to find some foolproof way to keep the pH up constantly...or just isolate that tank for inverts only *sigh*

problem is the guppies really...I don't have enough tank space to move them anywhere for the time being...I have a brand new 55g still in the box that I'm just itching to setup but I don't have space in my tiny apartment at the moment

then the clowns will go to the 55g
guppies to the 29g
and keep the inverts strictly in the 15g (maybe keep my lone ADF in there too...i can't imagine snails outcompeting her for food? unless I have super snails)

I think I might have to do the crushed coral idea that Wycco mentioned until I move

Edit: I do remember a few of the snails (when I originally bought them) already started showing signs of this discolouration
is it possible they just have different markings on them? or did I hit the nail on the head?

If you need a pic I can get one later tonight after baseball...just let me know

hmm that cuttlefish bone seems pretty good
it's recommended for crabs and turtles for calcium-rich dietary supplements

don't see the harm in using it for snails really

Edit: scratch the last edit I found the answer I was looking for
I will use the cuttlebone and hopefully things will start to turn around for the better in a couple of weeks
