Rapids Tank question

I'm thinking of getting some fish that live in fast moving waters like that of rivers and rapids. What's the best way to create this water movement in your aquarium?

Some specs on waht you have available would be good, because recreating that type of environment would be very difficult. You would need pools and areas of high current to truly replicate it.

water pumps and/or powerheads depending on the size of the tank is what I would do....

graphicdesign_r has a good point... replicating pools is difficult... but not impossible.

Careful placement of smooth rocks and pieces of slate or flat rocks and strategically placed powerheads and water pumps, and it can be done.

Good luck and keep us updated, I'm really interested in that tank because I've had ideas of creating something similar.

I thought about doing something like this, but didn't have the time. Ideally you'll need to investigate Pauldariums (sp) and have different pools fed by waterfalls etc with both aquatic and terrestrial plants. Amphibians can be kept in these too.

Ideally you'll need a long tank with at least 2 tiered levels, or just go with one tank with a decent powerhead to create the flow as Sunset suggests. Or have 3 small tanks, tiered and flowing into each other.

Keep us posted if you go through with this setup.

My aquarium is a 40 gallon breeder, 36L 18W and 16H. I was thinking of just using powerheads to do it because I don't think my aquarium is high enough to support the pools and such, but if it's possible, I'll be open to it.

I also saw a guy drawing up plans on how he was going to make his rapids tank, and he had two powerheads on one side running just above the substrate. Is this a good way to go about it also?

ok yeah, I think I'd rather do this. I just went online and saw that a river ecosystem kit costs 760 dollars o.o.
