Agreed. At least little ones like this tend to push off the "need" for a significant one. Given the lengthy duration of this one, I'd venture a guess that a lot of pend up stress was relieved.

That's actually a myth. When the plates slip, grind, or slide under each other, it could be setting up another area for a break, or another quake could occur that's completely unrelated. About a week prior to the 1994 Northridge quake here, there were two small ones in Santa Monica Bay. Some people were saying "Well, that relieved some stress," then, a week later.... :eek:

(In the Northridge quake, it was an unrelated, little-known fault that broke.)

The 24 hours after a quake are the most dangerous: it's in that period that a second, larger quake is most likely to happen, rather than a smaller aftershock.

I was doing some research into aquaria and earthquakes a few months ago, and found these posts. Those two were lucky: a friend's acrylic 75g was destroyed in the Northridge shaker.
