Rats or Hamsters?

Rats are awesome pets. We had some that would actually respond to their name like a dog. They'd come when you called them. Smart as hell and very very friendly. I think rats are a very very under rated pet.

And if youre going to get multiples ( I have 2 in a guinea pig cage) get them from the same tank/cage and at the same time. If you dont, chances are they will not get along

My brother's hamsters were all nippy. He did not handle them roughly or anything. My sister had some wonderful guinea pigs and I've had enjoyed having mice, rats, and a gerbil. The gerbil was my first pet, when I was 5 or 6, and I agree with the poster who said they were easy to care for, not very smelly, and it's fun to watch them rearange their cage.

Sorry, didn't see the posted was from AC.

And I'd be surprised if their diversity is that low....they are extremely hardy and mine have never had a single health problem.

I had one mouse, and it was the stinkiest rodent I have ever had, oh my goodness....I know its a small sample size, but I will never get a mouse again.

I agree with the bunny folks. Bunnies are lovely. I know cost is factor, so that rules out chinchilla and ferret. Some my vote now goes: Bunny, Hamster, Rat, Mouse. :)

I had 3 hamsters when I was younger and all 3 bit me...my vote is for bunny, then rat. Rabbits are so soft and cuddly! Plus, there are certain breeds that are smaller, dwarf bunnies, that only grow to be 2-2.5 lbs.

I had to raise 2 rats for a class in college and would have taken them home, but my dad said no. :shakehead:

my vote remains rat, as i dont recall bunnies or ferrets or dinosaurs or other things being considered by her. ;)

right.. i have kept hamsters and hate them! they very nippy!!
gerbils.. good fun but dumb
mice..stink!
now rats........ i worked in a animal lab.....looking back its very wrong, i was young it , goes against what i belive but..was a good paying job!
i worked breeding rats. mice ,rabbits and hamsters, i rescued number of rats and mice but rats are best by far!
so much character! very clean! i had two bobo and tutu they got bathed twice a week and blow dried! bobo was trained to turn on his tummy when time to blow dry that bit! they were the best pet i have ever had!
i worked their for two years handling 500 rats daily i never ever got bit!
i cleaned hamster lab once my hands were in shreds!
only thing i would say about rats is breeding they breed like mad can have up to 16 babies and will eat them if she cant look after them all which isnt very nice so i say dont breed!
and also the male rats ......bits will i say! are not attractive as the rat gets older they are large !!!! lol and it trails behind!

Rats.
Very intelligent, also they are large enough that you can pet them, carry them around ect. without the worry of hurting them.
Even raised with attention and people, I found that mice were more skittish, one was very loving, out of 20, but even she only came when SHE wanted to.
Hamsters are cool little guys, but I would get a baby to raise, or else they may be aggressive/shy.
I stick by rats, they are very personable, and if raised right very nice pets. I wish I could own one, but the rest of the family thinks they're 'nasty', which is not true either, they may smell if you have a male and don't clean the cage every day, but they are rather clean.

I would neuter a male rat if your decide to get one. My friend had it done and he was much more laid back and happy to be in her company. He wasn't constantly trying to get out and wander off looking for her females.

They can also be trained.
