re-adding water for water changes

I just did a water change. I poured the water from the bucket into the tank and the water ame pretty forcefully and fast. I slowed it and calmed as much as possible. However, whenever I do water changes, right after the water is pured in, there is TONS AND TONS of crap floating around in the water. I dont know if its rotting food or rotting feces or both. I think it is stuck in the plants, and then when the water is poured in, it swishes everything around and the stuff is knocked out from the fake plants. How do i stop that? Just feed them less?

Well if you clean the gravel before adding the new water that will lessen the amount of "stuff" that floats around. You can also avoid pouring in a full bucket of water. I often use a cup to put some of the water from the bucket to the tank, and then when the bucket is less full, and easier to handle, I pour the rest in. You can also pour the water out over any logs or large rocks. All of those things will lessen the amount of floating debris. Of course I always get some debris. And that is okay.

And yes feeding less can also help.

If you got a ton of stuff floating still you need to try and get it up with the gravel vac. and you may need to feed less. feeding them more than they need just makes for more uneaten food in the tank as well as more waste. this results in having to do more water changes/higher nitrate levels.

If you do a thorough job on gravel vac there shouldnt be too much debris. I will get a little bit in mine but the filter clears it up w/in 10 mins or so.
