Ready to give up

I thought that this may have been my issue however, I just called the city utilities and they don't use Chloramines. By the way it's like my nitrite crushing bateria have all but dissappeared. My ammonia comes down (although not a quick as before) but nitrite barely moves - basically the same as it was 2 weeks ago - sheesh.. :(

My 6 yr old daughter (who is very excited about getting fish) asked me yesterday when we would be getting our fish. I told her that once daddy figures out how to keep water then maybe we'll move up to keeping fish :o

These may be stupid questions, but are you running a filter? (I assume you are) Did you change or rinse your filter media?

If so, you might have destroyed some of your bacteria.

Other than that, the only other suggestion I have for you is if you aren't going to have plant eating fish, get some low light plants to help with the cycle and keeping the water clean. They have made my life much easier.
Good luck!

Are you using Ammo-lock?

I've read of this effect in tanks where Ammo-lock was used, all ammonia was removed, starving the bacteria as far as I can tell.

I do have filters and yes I did clean them lightly. I have an AC500 and an AC300 with 2 sponges in each. I cleaned only 1 sponge in each unit. I didn't use ammo-lock and not even sure what it is..

My ammonia is still coming down but nitrites continue to rise. So basically something wiped out only one type of bacteria. Will chlorine kill both types or just the one? This is the only thing I can figure is that the water was not de-chlorinated enough when it started moving through the filters. However, I put plenty of Aqua plus in the tank. I've talked to so many people in this area that use aqua plus and they have added it the same way I did (when adding water) with no problems.

As for plants I do want to get some real ones eventually. However, I'm on the dork plan right now - Once I get a passing grade in water keeping, then I can go to fish keeping. After I pass that course, I can move on to plants.. Of course now that I have my tank setup, ripping it apart to keep plants doesn't appeal to me right now..
