Really small filters for small tanks

I've seen a mini Jebo hang on trickle filter on Ebay and they've said that this would be perfect for a betta tank.

What does everyone think?

MightyQueenPixie,
Can you also give me directions on how to build a sponge filter? I have two of these tanks so I might try 2 diff things and see which one works best

Thanks all

I keep a male betta in a 2.5 gallon and he seems to be doing fine without a filter. How often do you change water? I do it every other day. Bettas can't tolerate a lot of water movement, it'll stress them out and die prematurely.
I hate to argue, but this comment about water movement stressing them out so that they die prematurely is untrue.

Yes, the water movement can stress them out at first because they are used to sitting in dinky little cups with no place to go. No excercise would do that to any animal. They adapt very quickly to the proper sized filter.

We're talking very small movement here, not full force VROOOOOOOM!

Do you honestly think that in their natural environment that the water is totally stagnant? Asian rice paddies -- with the exception of very few that have no access to river water -- are irrigated and that means that there is a source of fresh, albeit slowly moving, water. They are also lot larger than the little dinky aquariums and bowls we stick our betta fish in.

Just some food for thought,
Roan

Snoozie: Here is the link I was telling you about...

I didnt use silcone, just popped on an airstone to weight it down..Works perfect. Add a valve to control air flow...These filters work great and are very cheap to make...The one addition I made was to encase the sponge in a box made of plastic canvas. I made it about 1/2 deeper then the sponge so I could put a few rocks in the bottom for weight...I will post pics of my filters tomorrow...The nice thing is, you can make one any size or shape to accomodate your tank...
p.S. Be sure to use the rigid tubing, not the flexible airline...much easier to work with...

i've kept bettas for 15 years and i've never kept them in anything bigger than a 1.5 gallon bowl with no filtration and no heater, and i do a 100% water change once a week and i've had bettas live for 4-5 years, which is an average life span for a betta

Goodness,

There are so many confilicting opinions...Some say filter some say don't.

I still want to have filters in my tanks as I'm not getting anywhere not having them and I don't think they could make the situation worse, only better.

Thanks everyone for the links and advice I'll be checking them all out and hopefully find something to suit my needs....

At least I know what to look for now. Much appreciated :)
