Recommendations for Betta Companion

I noticed in your signature line that you also have a 40 gallon tank with only a few danios and guppies. Why don't you put your betta in there. There are no fin nippers in that lot. Betta's are fine with almost any non-aggressive fish in my experience.

I thought about adding the Betta to the 40 gallon, but my understanding is that Bettas are aggressive to fish with long fins or colorful fish. Both the Long-Finned Danios and male Guppies have long fins.

I also plan on getting other fish in my 40 gallon. So I would hate to put him in there and then have him harassing the others.

Male Bettas are known to nip male guppies, because of their long fins. And Danios are nippy.

Save the tankmates for when he's in a larger tank (atleast 10g IMO)....a 2.5g tank is just too small. :)

Tiny little observation from this corner...but why do people in general insist on placing bettas in small tanks? I almost want to vomit every time I walk into Petsmart and see 100's of bettas in 8ozs of water. 2.5G is definitely larger than that, but still, your options grow as your tank grows. 2.5G with other companions is very cramped quarters. Put him in a 10-30G and the quarters become less cramped and tensions lessen. Its like placing us in a small telephone booth and watching the tension. Place us in a subway train...the space increases and our spaces become less violated. I like to apply that to my companions of my fish tanks. Just my two cents.

P.S. I just got a male betta about a week ago and I am quarantining him in a 10G with filtration and heat. He will be moved to my 75 probably in the next week or so.

I had my male betta in a 16 g tank for 6 months or so before I introduced him to 3 albino cories. Due to the fact that cories stay mostly near the bottom, I think they are best suited for bettas. However I really feel that tolerance of tankmates depends on the individual personality of your betta. Mine did take one of the cory's eyes out and his dorsal fin (w/in a few weeks after the cories were introduced), but that was the only fight in over a year..and the injured cory is still alive (we call him pirate now!).
I also feel like the betta's personality was more lively w/these non-territorial, non-aggressive fish, in the tank.
I do think my betta prefered heat around 80 degrees) and filtration, just very low current.
Good luck w/your betta, mine sadly died recently, but I enjoyed him very much while he was here.
