I just completely redid a tank over the weekend. When I looked at it this morning I noticed a bright red small hairy algae growing in several places. Could this be a troublesome thing? It is like bright red! I have never seen anything like it. I was wondering if there was anything I can do to get rid of it. Thanks!

Rhodophyta is a type of red algae found in oceans but there are a few freshwater varieties as well. As with any algae, you can scrape it off but if it's in the water then it will grow back. The use of live plants may help suppress its growth as with other types of algae. If you think your tank may be getting too much light then decrease the lighting or if the tank is near window, may want to put a background on it to eliminate the daylight coming through -- unless of course you have live plants, which need a lot of light usually.

I have a little bit of green algae but no more than what my ottos take care of. It is a planted 72 gallon. I have the lights on a timer and they get about 2wpg for 8 hours each day. I have never had anything like this. I had never even heard of a bright red algae light this. I just want to figure out how to take care of it before it gets out of control.
