red belly pacus

At our local LFS they had a pacu that had rammed itself into its 120G tank and busted it wide open. The pacu has scars on his nose from ramming himself into it.

Saw some of these at the ga aquarium. Huge does'nt cover it. One was running around with a cherry tomato in his mouth teasing the others with it. Big Big Big fish.

The fish stores sell them because people buy them. They are in the business to make money, not to decide for people what to get. We all need to discourage newbies from making poor choices. And the better fish stores will also, knowing repeat business is good. But the big boxes will not be concerned with it, and often the help doesn't know any better.

and the thing is, it seems like they arent telling you because they want you to come back because they "were so nice and let you have whatever you want"

Point is they are a business, not a social program. If you want to buy any fish in the place and have the money they are there to sell it to you. Done deal. If you think its any different you may not be living in the USA, where the market sets the rate.

red bellies dont get as big as the blacks (which can reach upto 5') but still get big (supposedly 16-24") so he may be able to keep if he gets something like a 6''-30''-20'' at the least ( and this is if they only get 16-24")

I think this is the best point made in this thread.
it's a great point! But I also agree that aquarium stores should do their part in education. If they have a tank of Pacus labeled as good for a 30g tank, like I've seen at MANY Petco/PetSmart's, I think that they should take some of the heat. It's really not right to sell those fish in your average pet store, there is NO need to sell a HUGE fish on a regular basis to people who can not handle them!

We should all start leaving post it's at Wal Mart with the truth on them about Pacus. lol
