Hello all, this is my first post here.

1. What is the size of your tank?

30gal

2. What are your water parameters? State the brand of test kit used.

Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 30 pH 8.4
API Master FW Kit

3. Is your aquarium set up freshwater or brackish water?

FW

4. How long the aquarium has been set up?

Completed cycle 2 weeks ago. Kept bact. alive with ammonia (4ppm daily), added fish Wednesday 7/21.

5. What fish do you have? How many are in your tank? How big are they? How long have you had them?

11 Gold Barbs, juvies ~1in total length. Had them 2 days.

6. Were the fish placed under quarantine period (minus the first batch from the point wherein the tank is ready to accommodate the inhabitants)?

Currently in QT

7. What temperature is the tank water currently?

78... I cooled it from 80 because I suspected something bacterial?

8. Are there live plants in the aquarium?

Yes

9. What filter are you using? State brand, maintenance routine and power capacity.

Tetra Whisper 60 w/ AC bio-media and polyfiber... rinsed in tank water bi-weekly.

10. Any other equipment used (aside from heater and filter which are two very important components of the tank)?

DIY CO2, T5 HO 39w bulb, EI dosing of KNO3 KHSPO4 & CSM+B

11. Does your aquarium receive natural sunlight at any given part of the day? What is your lighting schedule (assuming you do not rely on sunlight for our viewing pleasure)?

39w T5 6 hours a day

12. When did you perform your last water change and how much water was changed? How often do you change your water? Do you vacuum the substrate?

Changed 2 hours before I purchased fish... weekly 50% PWCs due to EI

13. What foods do you provide your fish? What is the feeding schedule?

TetraColor flakes as of now... looking to expand in the near future.

14. What unusual signs have you observed in your fish?

Nothing other than the bump in the picture... fish eats and schools like all the others.

15. Have you treated your fish ahead of diagnosis? If so, what treatments did you use? State your reasons for planning ahead of proper diagnosis.

No

This gold barb has a red bump I noticed while acclimating (store accepts no returns :silly: ). It is actually on the far side (the fish's left side) of the "throat" area, but I haven't been able to get a better picture of it. The bump is red in the middle.

No other fish show signs like this, and he acts just like the others.

BTW, this is a "metallic" strain of Gold Barb, so he's not crazily pale - he has colored up a bit since then though.

Thanks for any help!

Thanks for all the info, very helpful. Everything with your tank sounds good imo. Unfortunately, there's really no way for us to help you determine the cause of the bump without seeing it. I know photographing fish is hard — they always want to show off their best side, lol — but keep trying and add pics as soon as you can. Good luck!

Looks like it might be a growth/infection inside the gill. That whole area looks a little dark to me. If the other fish are fine, you should probably move that one to a QT tank for separate treatment. Unfortunately, I really can't advise you as to medications. Hopefully someone else who can will post soon!

I think you are right H2Ogal. Good thing I have a cycled QT ready, it just means I am gonna have to wait weeks more to get my Tiger Barbs. Today is a "tank day" as I am working on various modifications, upgrades, and improvements to my new tank :D So before I do a PWC on the Gold Barb Tank, I will move my injured guy to QT.

Anyway, please keep any ideas coming. I think I should try melafix? I've never medicated a fish before, except heat to beat Ich.

I think that Melafix is more of an antiseptic/healing aid than a treatment. You could try that, or Tetra Lifeguard which is supposed to kill harmful bacteria, fungi, viruses and and parasites. Along with clean water, that sort of "treatment lite" might be enough.

Maybe a broad spectrum antibiotic? I think that Mardel's Marcyn Plus treats gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial infections. The redness/bump don't look distinctly fungus-y, and I have no idea what a viral infection would look like, which is why I'm thinking treat bacterial first. (The fungus disorders referred to on the Marcel Plus packaging are, I'm pretty sure, actually all bacterial.) But, really, I'm not the best person to advise you. I don't know why no one else has chimed in on this thread; usually more people do. :uhoh:

Well, fortunately the red bump is no longer red, and is almost not even a bump anymore :)

But my fish have started flashing:

This is flashing, right? I think it may be gill flukes - no signs of ich, but the gills have always been rather red :(

Okay, I'm sure it's flashing. I think they have gill flukes. I want to get them medicated food, or medication I can soak their food in. Here are the issues:
1: I have inverts and plants
2: I know most anti-parasitic meds kill the cycle. I am going on vacation soon and won't be able to do daily PWCs so I need to preserve my cycle.
3: I need my fish to be healthy! :(

:( :(
