Red Cherry Shrimp tank

So I was thinking of setting up my 10 gal as a cherry shrimp tank. I currently have sand substrate and a regular HOB filter. I am completely NEW to the invert world. Do I need to remove the sand and not use any substrate? I read that I can use panty hose zip tied to intake tube of filter to prevent shrimp from being sucked up into the HOB. Is this right or do I need to get a different filter?

Help.... I wanna set it up right. :confused:
 
Lots of people here keep invert tanks with substrate. No reason why you cannot keep substrate at all. You can use a sponge or pantyhose to cover the filter intakes.
 
I use sponges designed for the aquaclear filters to protect my shrimp from the intake. Media bags work well, as does pantyhose. Sand is just fine, but a dark color is often nicer for cherry shrimp as it really makes their redness pop. A lighter substrate can have them have a more clear, less opaque red appearance from my experience. Shrimp also appreciate some plants. The babies like to hide in plants and they all graze on the micro organisms found growing in the plants. I use moss, crypts, hornwort, water sprite, anubias, etc in my shrimp tanks. They do well in a broad range of temperatures and water conditions so are a great first shrimp to own. Let us know if you have any other questions!
 
What kind of aquaclear sponges do you use? I tried looking for something like that, and I couldn't find it. I'm going to petsmart tomorrow to see if I can find something, so if you have a picture reference, that would be awesome. I don't have shrimp yet, but I want to make sure I have the proper set up.
 
I just use the sponges designed for the filter..either ac20 or ac30 sponges work great. They are filter media, I just cut a small hole the whole way through, top to bottom, then slide it over the intake. Looking for a pic for ya. They come in a blue box, this is what they look like over the intake (pardon the picture quality). They start out white, but end up a nice brown color over time. I just rinse them in tank water during maintenance. Hope this helps.

quick question while were on the subject im getting 20 glass shrimp will they be ok in this tank the filters will be gone by time i get them and will be a canister filter i already have fly wire to go over the inlet and it will be sitting up quite high anyway!!
i am also getting kuhli loaches which i have been told will not eat or disrupt the shrimp

just need to know they will be ok

just planted last week so they will take a while to get bigger :)
